How It Works

In order to get your computer to do what you want it to do, you'll need to understand a little about how it works. This section provides a brief introduction to several aspects of Linux (many of the points will apply to other systems too).

• /Booting -- what gets run when you turn your computer on
• /Logging In -- what happens when users log in and out
• /Devices -- hardware devices and /dev
• /Printing -- setting up printers
• /Filesystems -- using floppies, cds, zip disks, hard drives, etc
• /Security -- users, groups, file ownership and permissions
