What is Nasgaïa ?

Nasgaïa project is all of that:

  1. Yet another CD based based Linux distribution, optimized for i686 processors and later, with an advanced installation program (Nsetup). It comes on a single CD, with a strict selection of common softwares, and tries to avoid duplicates softwares (and outdated things) for given tasks.
  2. Ncooker is our own "port" system, that ease the task to extend the installed system by automating sources downloading, compilation, installation, and packages management through the use of Nbuilds: very small tar archives with build scripts, descriptions etc.
  3. Napt, which is being developed right now, will soon be a front-end to all of that, and will make packages management; upgrades, compilation dependencies, binaries packages searching a kinda easy task. You can see it as an hybrid approach of Debian's apt and Gentoo's emerge, and other things too.
  4. The site NasgaïArt is making efforts to offer Nasgaïa a nice visual design, a specific aspect, and tease your imagination !
  5. A documentation effort, with an extensible documentation. To help us translating it in English, or submit brand new documents in English, have a look here.
  6. A community, with mailing lists, forums and IRC channel.

It's important to note that the whole distro is under GPL, and only include really free code. The documentation is under FDL and NasgaïArt follows the art-libre license.

Nasgaïa, beyond just a Linux CD, is an extensible project, that tends to "glue" together many good approaches we find in other projects, and initiate others when needed. Some examples of things that are being worked on:
