Core ROX software

ROX-Filer is the core component of the desktop, so make sure you have that first.

• ROX-Filer is a fast file manager which can also (optionally) manage the desktop background and panels.
• ROX-Session is a session manager. This program will set things up so that you get a nice desktop when you login, and lets you change various desktop-wide settings.
• OroboROX is the lightweight Window Manager for the ROX Desktop.

Additional ROX Software

This is software generally written with the ROX Desktop in mind. Usually uses one of the ROX Libraries (below)

• Add App install more software easily.
• Archive can create and unpack archive files (supported formats include zip, tar, gz and bz). This is useful for installing the other programs!
• Edit is a simple text editor, with drag-and-drop saving and a powerful search and replace.
• System shows you what your system is doing. It displays bar graphs of processes and their memory use, and filesystems and their free space.
• Memo is a simple alarm clock. It displays your appointments, tells the time and you can set alarms to go off.
• Wallpaper can be used to place an image on your desktop background.
• Pager is a panel applet that shows a miniature view of your desktop.
• Tasklist is a panel applet that shows a list of currently open applications.
• MIME-Editor - View and change the database of filetype information.
• Contacts is an address book and contact manager based on the vCard standard.
• RETicker - Watch your favorite news-ticker (rss/rdf) in your panel.
• Depend - Check a ROX program to see if you have all the other things it needs to work.
• MPlayer-ROX - A simple wrapper for mplayer for easier watching movies and using subtitles.
• MagickThumbnail to generate thumbnails for all filetypes which ImageMagick can handle, and gimp's .xcf files too.
• Rename - Little app written in Ruby, to rename files and dirs recursively using ?Reg Exps. You can test the resulting names before apply the action.
• DevWatch - (experimental) little app written in Python, which is supposed to update a panel or the pinboard (add or remove an icon) when a storage device gets added or removed by HAL.
• Find - A utility to search files for strings and display and edit the results.
• Terminal - A terminal emulator wrapper.
• Menu - An applet providing an application start menu for the ROX panel.
• XDG-Menu - A panel applet that displays an application menu button. The menus it builds fit the XDG Menu Specification published by freedesktop.org.

Audio/Video

MusicBox An mp3 and ogg player. Written in python.

Ripper A CD to mp3 ripper/encoder.

Volume A Volume control Panel applet and Mixer Application.

Songer

Songer is an ID3 tag editor for MP3s. ID3 tags are small chunks of extra data in the end of an MP3 file containing information about the audio, such as Artist, Title, Album, etc.

This is a copy with a patch I made to support ID3v2 tags. -- Ken H.

RoxCD

An CD player/ripper for ROX Desktops. Written in python.

RoxDAO

A graphical frontend for cdrdao that lets you compose and burn audio CD's in disc-at-once mode. Supports other cdrdao features such as nondestructive cutting, editable trackmarks, and silences.

Mp3Ogg2Wav

A simple application that converts .mp3 and .ogg files to 44.1KHz 16bit stereo .wav's, used by RoxDAO when you add .mp3 or .ogg files to a CD project.

Picky

A image viewer and slideshow app like KuickView or EOG.

Album

A program to package .mp3 files into an App Dir which will send them to XMMS when run. Support for .ogg and MusicBox is planned.

ROXmpc

A simple to use MPD client.

Internet

Fetch A candidate for the Download Handler in 2.1.2. This does not use wget but the urllib Python module.

ROXget

Download Handler. Features a "ROXified" interface, now with proxy support.

Other

RoxISO is a frontend to mkisofs and cdrecord which lets you create and burn data CD's.

OKM

OK Monitor (originally called Everything's OK), waits for events to occur then changes the image to indicate the event.

Resolution

Lets you change the screen resolution dynamically.

For now, there are lots of ROX applications at Desktop utilities untill they get fixed around. More resources are at http://rox.sourceforge.net/rox_utils.html too.

Enhancements

• Andrew Flegg's ROX/X11 page contains patches to allow objects to be dragged from Mozilla to ROX-Filer, and a Gtk+ 2 wget wrapper.
• Stephen Watson's ROX patches page has numerous patches, including one to bash to allow it to support App Dirs.
