Bitmap graphics

A bitmap is an image stored as a grid of coloured dots, such as a digital photograph.

Very powerful bitmap image editor. Excellent for everything from photo-retouching to creating icons.

Vector graphics

A vector image is an image described geometrically as a collection of lines and arcs.

• dia -- flowcharts, ER-charts and other box-and-link type diagrams
• inkscape -- excellent SVG drawing package (fork of sodipodi)
• sketch -- another vector drawing package
• tgif -- non-GTK vector editor, but still very good: read this tutorial.
