Linux Format, Issue 4

"... highly usable and a pleasure to work with."

"A speedy and unintrusive file manager with some really top-notch documentation."

The Year In Review: Linux Planet's Picks for the Best and Worst of 2001

"The real killer combination, this year, proved to be GNOME with the ROX Filer running as the file manager. ROX is light-weight, flexible, and easy to integrate with just about anything. There are lots of ways to customize and automate it, too."

Linux Orbit

"If you need a fast and light file manager or are looking for a replacement for your current one, give ROX Filer a test drive, you won't be disappointed."

Note that these comments are mostly from emails from a couple of years ago (I haven't been keeping it up-to-date lately). I left out the names, as
I did't know if people wanted them shown. When adding your own comments, feel free to leave your name in.
Also, you don't have to put new comments in the verbatim block. I'm just too lazy to reformat them all for the Wiki...

"I've started using ROX and xfce4 about three months ago when
xfce started it's beta process, and I'm absolutely impressed. Before
that I was holding Window Maker dearly, but I've always wanted more
integrity with the various apps that I run. Most of them use gtk/gtk2,
so naturally it had to be an xfce desktop. xfce's current own filemanager
is nice, but awfully slow, and I believe that it won't catch up with ROX
anytime soon. So it'll be ROX. Love the thing!"

"I'd just like to say I've been using ROX and several of its
components (the filer, session manager and panel in particular) for
about three months and this stuff is of outstanding quality... it
is so small and fast it is unbelievable... and it actually
works..."

"ROX-Filer is _so_ nice to use. Thank you *so* much for putting
in the work to implement this. It's the single best file manager
for Unix that I have yet found."

"ROX is a fantastically great, small, and fast filemanager, ...
Very cool, has most of the features I liked of Nautilus/Konqueror,
but makes my AMDK6-2 400 work *so* much faster..... Give it a try,
really great project."

"I just wanted to write you and thank you for this wonderful
file manager. I've never found a file manager I liked, until now.
You've done a great job with it, keep it up. I've never used RiscOS
before, but this is how file management should work. Thank you
again."

"This program is beautiful! I commend you for your effort! And
it's so FAST!!! It's refreshing to see a filemanager that does what
it is supposed to do without trying to be a web browser. Thank you
so much for this software."

"I downloaded rox-filer 20 minutes ago, and I have to say that
it is *awesome*. I didn't _ever_ expect to say this for a graphical
file manager, but rox-filer is really nice. It is blazing fast,
clean, easy to use and *simple*. Most graphical programs irritate
me, but rox is a joy to use and doesn't _at all_ get in the
way."

"I am fairly new to Linux (about 10 hours as yet), so as yet I
am proceeding slowly. My first experimental use is with a very old
machine onto which I installed the version of Red Hat 7.3 Gnome
that came with "Red Hat 7.3. for Dummies". Within a few hours I
decided to replace the standard Gnome desktop with ROX. :-)

"Deeply impressed with ROX. For me it is particularly useful as I am
a long-time RO user, and having a 'familiar' desktop/filer model
helps me a lot with coming to terms with Linux use."

"I just wanted to let you know that ROX has replaced all those
other desktop interfaces. ROX is incredibly fast on my *ancient*
Micron laptop. Thanks for an incredible product that I have not
seen equalled anywhere else."

"Well, I've added another icon to the desktop, and again have a
decent file manager on board! Many thanks. I like the lightness of
ROX, its speed, and its power. It blends nicely in my current
environment, giving me just what I need without bloat."

"Congratulations... This is the *best* program I've ever tried,
and one that was sorely missing in Linux."

"Keep up the great work on ROX. It's awesome now, and just keeps
getting better!"

"Never has my linux box been so incredibly fast, usable and
goodlooking! I used to be a big fan of wmfinder, but ROX-Filer is
the best filemanager I've ever seen. At last someone tries to push
ease of use forward without producing ugly clones of windows.<xhtml:br/>

"Every piece of softare should have the quality of those of the ROX
project!"

"Just wanted to say Thanks for ROX. I love it! I find it much
easier to configure than either of the supposedly user-friendly
Gnome or KDE (not that I'm knocking either of them). I'm running
vers. 1.1.5 on Mandrake 8.0; it's never crashed on me. Great
stuff!"

"I was looking for a good file manager - but I found an
excellent one instead! ROX rocks!"

"I've been using ROX for about a week now -- at home on Linux
and at work on Solaris. I have found it very quick and responsive.
I particularly like that it now takes a couple of seconds to log in
rather than half a minute. I'm running it with Sawfish which seems
like the ideal combination. The development version adds a lot of
very useful functionality and seems to be very stable."

"First off I'll say that this program is incredible; gmc,
nautilus, konqueror and the like have gotten everything backwards
that this program gets right. Runs fast and very intuitive. I don't
need all the fluff of other file managers and this is perfect. I
was tired of waiting forever after clicking an icon just to see
what's in there on a 400 MHz machine."

"I love ROX-Filer, and have even considered buying a RISCOS
based machine because of it ..."

"Thanks a lot for your work, I really think your program is one
of the best in its category, because of its lightness and ergonomy,
keep up the good work :)"

"I just wanted to let you know that I think the ROX-Filer really
is a beautiful program and also improved very much over the last
year. I used to use DFM which is also nice and versatile, but slow
on my 75mhz machine. ROX is just very fast!! (It even compiles
fast). I also like very much the elegant and customizable MIME-type
handling. So Thank You for the beautiful program!"

"I'd like to give a big thanks to Thomas and the whole "ROX
team"... I'm a long-time linuxer, and have been cruising between
desktops for almost as long (TkDesk... GNUSTep... KDE... Gnome...
KDE 2... Flek...), and I have finally the feeling that I found the
*right* one. Finally a desktop project that has great GUI concepts
(like GNUStep), is actively developped (like KDE), is lightweight
(like Flek), and respect the unix philosophy (like Gnome)!"

"Anyway, it is leaps ahead of all GUI filemanagers I've seen. I
used to be a huge member of the CLI-is-more-efficient crowd but now
I'm not so sure. rox mixes the GUI and CL so well and it is so
efficient and configurable, I now think GUIs are the future of file
managers ect. If anything, this is a good example of what could be
done if advanced users were kept in mind while still keeping it
simple."

"To add to the list of admiring compliments: ROX-Filer is
superb. Now an essential part of my desktop."

"Well all I can say is it rocks !!!!"

"I have been very impressed with rox so far, and I like all the
new features, especially the pinboard support."

"I really really enjoy ROX! and it's certainly the nicest filer
I've ever seen."

"It's great to finally be able to use a fast graphical
filemanager that is flexible and stable!"

"First of all I'll have to thank you for creating the fastest
grapical filemanager I've ever seen. Great work!"

"I am a long-time RISCOS user and am delighted to find that even
in its current, beta state ROX still beats any other file manager I
have tried under X. I spent a couple of hours playing with it and
have been completely won over!"

"I have to say that I am really happy that somebody is doing
this great application."

"So far, aptly named! The filer takes me back straight away,
..."

"I really hope your software will put ideas into other people's
minds, and why not, leading Linux distributors might include it in
their CDs, instead of the crappy xfm."

"First of all congrats for the great ROX programs and especially
the filer. [...] Anyway, keep up the excellent work (both useful
and concise)! Waiting impatiently for new versions of the
filer..."

"Congratulations, by the way. ROXfiler is the first directory
browser that hasn't totally sucked for me by either crashing in the
first five seconds or having too many layers of cruft or, in the
case of xfm, reloading the whole directory every time you do
everything."

"The feel while using ROX is quite good (better than KFM or even
better than Gnome's), but I've got to be accustomed to it. First
thing I did was setting the options for a total RISC OS clone, and
I nearly felt I was home."

"I'm very impressed with your work on the ROX desktop. I've
never had the opportunity to use RISC OS, but ROX is definitely a
very nice interface. I've started using it in combination with the
sawmill window manager and GNOME's pager applet, and I have to
admit that this makes a quite comfortable desktop."

"I'm really excited about Rox. The code is quite understandable
and well structured. This is the first desktop and file manager
that I have actually been using (after trying KDE and dfm, at
least)."

"First of all congrats for the great ROX programs and especially
the filer."

"I like it it has lots of potential. [...] It's very nice to see
drag and drop working like this under X."

"Anyway, it's pleasant to see real filer windows on this desktop
- whether or not there are applications supporting sensible
drag-and-drop saving."

"I have jcc and medic running under linux emulation on my
machine and it was great fun to be able to save from jcc into the
filer window and load from it."

"Brilliant UI design. The path between thought and action in
the Filer is so short that one doesn't notice it. It shows up
Nautilus by being simple but unconstraining. This is the first
unix filemanager that is compelling enough to take me away from the
commandline for more than the first 10 minutes after installation."

"Excelent job. This is what many of us have been waiting for,
very very fast, clear design and highly customizeable.
I will definitevely keep with it as my default file manager.
Konqueror or Nautilus took about 10 seconds to open in my k6II-500,
but ROX rsponse is amazing. The only thing i have to say is THANKS!!

"Thank you so much. Icewm is a pleasure to work with if only combined
with ROX. My mother, coming from windows, had no problem whatsoever to
work with this new desktop. It is fast, small, unobtrusive and reliable.
I myself used to do most file managing in a shell, but now I'm quite
satisfied using ROX. Thx!"

"After using it, you will stick to it. It's so efficient and fast!
Thanks! Wonderful job!"

"I've liked ROX-filer so much, I decided to go the whole way and get
zero-install, ROX-session, the ROXwm and everything else. I'm about
three hours into it and very impressed. Thanks for such a great desktop
enviroment! -James"

"I finally found the world's best file manager. Personally I think I
prefer konqueror's look & feel (if only it ran as fast as rox!) but
rox's is still very nice. The interface takes a bit of getting used to,
but the bit where you press / is great (as with the '!' one to type
a command). Great work! I like the look of nextstep's file manager,
it would be great if rox had the path to the folder your in up the
top - im no a great fan of the "up" button. I really love what youve
done, I'm starting to familiarise myself with the code so I'm gonna
try to change the interface a bi to suit me, im so glad its in c! -Zak"
